Desiccant Breathers for Industrial Gearboxes
Gearbox reservoirs breathe in moisture and particulates with every thermal cycle. Armor distributes the desiccant breather technology that keeps oil cleaner, drier, and serviceable longer.
Standard breathers fail at the molecular level
A typical 5-micron stock breather stops large debris, but it does nothing for water vapor or sub-micron particulates — and those are the bigger threats to gearbox oil. Water vapor enters as the reservoir cools, condenses, and accelerates oxidation; sub-micron particulates pass straight through cheap filtration and abrade bearing surfaces. Wear-metal counts and water content trend upward shift after shift, and oil-analysis labs see it long before failure does.
Desiccant + filtration in one device
Modern desiccant breathers combine particulate filtration with a color-changing silica gel that captures moisture as the reservoir breathes. When the desiccant is saturated, the color tells your tech to swap it — no analytics platform required.

Where we see gearbox breathers questions come up most.
Common questions
How do I know when the desiccant is saturated?
The silica gel inside the breather changes color when it has captured its moisture capacity — blue or gold when fresh, fading to pink as it saturates. The breather body is translucent so a visual check tells your tech to swap it without disassembly. Replace at full saturation per the manufacturer's interval guidance.
Can I retrofit a Des-Case breather to an OEM gearbox?
Yes — Des-Case ships adapter kits for most major gearbox manufacturers. Send the model number and we'll spec it.
